Hilton Manasseh Carty, OBE〔(London Gazette )〕 was the Dean of Antigua from 1977 until 1986.〔(The Restoration Deans )〕 Carty was educated at Codrington College and ordained in 1945. 〔''Crockford's Clerical Directory 1975-76'' p162 London: Oxford University Press, 1976 ISBN 0-19-200008-X〕 Having spent the early part of his career in Guyana as Curate at New Amsterdam followed by Plaisance, he was invited to Bristol, England in 1962 for the post of Curate at (St Agnes Church ), St Paul's Parish. In September 1965 his landmark appointment as Priest in charge of (St Francis Church ), Cowley, Oxford, was widely reported by Associated Press (example - (Nashua telegraph, New Hampshire, p14 )) to be the first of its kind in England awarded to a person of Caribbean or African descent.
